The Theonomists and Preterism

Question: Can preterists be "theonomists," or is there another name for Preteristic Theonomists?

Answer: Theonomists do much good by advancing a legal, covenantal perspective of the Law as it relates to the Church in our world today. Our applications of law would be very similar concerning the ordering of our church and societies. We both strongly oppose all forms of antinomianism--especially dispensationalism. However, Christians of a preteristic persuasion would be quick to point out to Theonomists that the Old Covenant no longer exists as a living contract after AD 70 (it is null, void, and extinct--replaced by the New Covenant). Most theonomists today say that the Old Covenant contract still exists, often using Matthew 5:17-19 as their support text. The Mosaic Law Contract was annulled in full (Heb 7:11-19), not just the so-called ceremonial laws. The Old Mosaic Covenant was waxing old and went extinct at at AD 70--it was "about to vanish" at the time Hebrews 8:13 was written. Nevertheless, many aspects of Mosaic law carry over into the Christic Law within the eternal New Covenant contract, but with some important modifications. The Law of Christ derives from established Mosaic Laws and precepts, even though the covenant contracts themselves have fully transitioned. Some modifications of Mosaic Law are as follows:

(1) The Deuteronomy 27:26 "curse of the Mosaic Law" is abolished under the Christic Legal System (Gal 3:10-13)
(2) The Mosaic ceremonial and temple rites and priesthood are done away (Heb 7:11-19; Heb 10:5-10; Col 2:14-17; Eph 2:14-18; Matt 12:1-7; Matt 15:15-20; Mk 7:14-15; John 4:21-23; Mark 13:1-4,30)
(3) The principle spirit of God's laws through Moses are to be applied and fully observed, and not a tortured application of the letter of Mosaic law (2 Cor 3:6, 1 Tim 1:8-10; Rom13:8-10; Rom 8:4; Rom 2:13)
(4) Deuteronomy 6:5 and Leviticus 19:18 are the two greatest of the Mosaic writ from which all judicial observance must flow (Lk 10:27)

So, the New Covenant Law of Christ (1 Cor 9:21; Gal 6:2) is a modification of the old Mosaic Law system. The Law of Christ is the final code for mankind. It contains Christ's teaching on how to live by God's law.

Question: If Preterism is true, then what next?

Answer: All biblical expectations of the ever-expanding dominion of God's kingdom and righteousness on earth are carried out by, in, and through Christ and His Church (Isaiah 9:6-7; Daniel 7:27; Lk 1:33; Eph 3:9-11,21; Heb 12:27-28; Matt 21:43; Titus 2:14; Rev 5:9-10; Rev 2:26; Matt 25:21). The Church is the very Body of Christ, the "fullness of Him that fills all in all" (Eph 1:22-23). As St Paul wrote, "Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever" (Eph 3:21). God's peple must exercise dominion and teach covenantal law. The Church, ruling and reigning with Christ, must continue to bring all created things into accordance with God's law, be it individuals, families, states, governments, or any other aspect of creation. All power in heaven and earth belongs to Christ and his people (Matt 28:18-19; Matt 16:18-19).
